In this last of six articles, the Bishops of the United States point out that conscience is not our own personal values and opinions about what is right or wrong; nor is it something personal that no one else can correct. Conscience is not infallible and we can make erroneous judgments due to ignorance, sin, or rejection of Church authority or teaching. God gives us the grace to maintain a well-formed conscience that is truly sensitive to the voice of God and rooted in His Word and in the sacred and certain teachings of His Catholic Church. Such a conscience will be upright and reliable as we vote in this year’s election.
